Module summary

This module will consider the computational aspects of Income Tax, Corporation Tax and Capital Gains Tax, incorporating related aspects of tax planning. The focus will be on the numerical side of taxation, building on the theoretical knowledge gained in LUBS3685 which considers the economics of the taxation process.

Objectives

On completion of this module students will be able to:
1. Understand the theoretical underpinnings of the corporate and capital taxes systems in the UK;
2. Appreciate the distinctions between, as well as the inter-relationship between corporate, capitol and income taxes and
3. Demonstrate the effect of the corporate tax burden on companies and of the capital taxes burden on individuals, unincorporated bodies and companies.

Syllabus

The development, implications and effects of corporation tax and capital gains tax on companies, individuals and unincorporated bodies respectively. The relationship of corporation tax to income tax and capital gains tax.

The development of inheritance tax as a means to combat concentration of wealth and proposals for a wealth tax. The importance of corporate and capital tax planning. Current issues and developments.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

- Formative feedback will be available at every seminar and students will be encouraged to hand in work for marking and feedback.
- Teaching staff on the module will also be available at set desk times each week to give students every opportunity to deal with problems as they arise and receive feedback on an ongoing basis.
